Tournaments

When should I sign up for tournaments?
As soon as the host opens registration. Popular ones fill up: Novice State has filled early three years in a row, and its price goes up on November 29. Every tournament page lists the deadline. Register with the host first, then fill out the tournament sign-up so the coaches know your wrestler is going.
How do I register for a tournament?
Most biddy tournaments use the OAC site, register.ohioathletics.com. Make a free parent account, add your wrestler, pick the tournament and weight class, and pay. Swanton uses Trackwrestling instead. Each tournament page has the link and step-by-step instructions.
Does the tournament sign-up on this site enter my wrestler?
No. It only tells the coaches who is going. You still have to register and pay with the host. If you give an email, we send you a reminder the day before the tournament.
Novice or regular bracket?
Pick Novice if your wrestler has less than 3 years of tournament experience. Pick the regular bracket if they have 3 years or more.
What should my wrestler bring to a tournament?
Singlet, wrestling shoes, headgear, water and snacks. Get there before weigh-ins close.
When should we get to a tournament?
We recommend getting there about an hour before the start time so your wrestler can warm up and stretch. Weigh-in times are different at every tournament. When the host posts them, they are on that tournament's page under Tournaments.
How long does a biddy tournament last?
It varies from tournament to tournament. Some are as short as 3 hours, and some run as long as 10. Some tournaments split into two sessions by age group, so check the tournament page for your wrestler's session. Plan for a long day and pack food and water.
Will a coach be in my wrestler's corner?
We will try to have coaches at the tournaments listed, but our coaches will not be at every one. The list right now includes all the OAC and local biddy tournaments. The coaches will share which tournaments we want the team to go to and compete at together. The White team will only go to a few tournaments a year.
How does my wrestler get to Grade School State?
Only qualifiers and alternates from an OAC district can go. Ours is the Perrysburg District. Qualifiers then have 7 days to register for State on the OAC site ($20).

Teams and practice

Which team should my child be on?
You choose at sign-up. There are no age groups. Generals White is for wrestlers learning the basics first, or whose attention span is still limited: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:45-7:45 PM. Generals Black practices with the junior high program, after school, 3:00-4:45 PM, probably Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (days not final yet). It is for wrestlers who want to compete and get better, and who can stay focused so the junior high can run its practice. If a Black team wrestler is not focusing or is a distraction, the coaches will suggest White. Can't make the Black team's time? Choose White.
Where is practice?
In the Anthony Wayne High School wrestling room. Come in through Door 7.
What are the rules in the high school room?
Wrestlers stay in the wrestling room area for all of practice. Send a full water bottle, because they will not leave the room to get water. Bathrooms are downstairs in the high school locker room area. Room rules
Does my child need wrestling shoes for practice?
We suggest buying your child a pair of wrestling shoes for practice. They need them for tournaments too.
What should my child wear to practice?
Shorts and a t-shirt. No zippers or buttons.
Does my child need headgear at practice?
No, headgear is not required at practice, but we suggest it. Some tournaments, like Novice State, do require headgear.
Can parents watch practice?
Yes. Watch from the side of the room. Please don't put chairs on the mats, because chairs damage them. You can sit on the mat along the side, or bring a chair and sit where there are no mats laid down.
Is there practice over Christmas and New Year's?
Not set yet. The practice schedule for Christmas week and New Year's week is TBD, and we will probably be off both weeks. We will post it in the Facebook group and the Sunday email once it is decided.
What if my child has to miss practice?
No problem. You don't need to let us know. Wrestlers can come and go as they please.
Can my child switch teams during the season?
Black team wrestlers can come to White practice, whether they can't make a Black practice or just want more training. White team wrestlers cannot practice with Black, because Black is a more advanced and focused group. During the season, if a White team wrestler is doing well, the coaches may invite them to move up to Black. Moving up mid-season is by invite only. If a Black team wrestler is not focusing or is a distraction, the coaches will suggest White.

Gear

Does the team provide a singlet, or do we buy one?
The team does not provide singlets. You can buy one through the team store.
Does my child need a mouthguard?
No, a mouthguard is not needed.
